Hi. New here. I am 32 years old (female with 2 children). I had Dynesis Stabilization System placed at L3 down and L5/S1 fused in May of 2006. I have had off and on nerve symptoms since (nto near as bad since surgery), daily pain (not near as bad since surgery). But just this week I have noticed that when I get in a swimming pool, I have very intense pain and pressure in my low back, leg pain, and my bladder leaks after I empty it. My bladder continues leak/or have odd sensations for about 20 mins after I get out of the pool. If I move around in the pool, pain is more intense and my bladder leaks even more. I was told that swimming is great exercise after back surgery...I am having odd effects. Guess I am just really confused and would love some insight.

Thanks!!

Hi momof2,

I was reading of the dynesis stabilization and there is no mention of the symptoms with the baldder you mentioned. Not to say it not related. They are still doing clinical trials and research follow-up on people who have had this done.
I guess the best thing would be to consult with your neurosurgeon to discuss your symptoms to see if indeed this is caused by the dynesis system. Odd you only notice this while in a swimming pool. Certainly needs to be investigated to distinguish the cause.

Thank you so much for your response. I called my primary care physician yesterday and they are looking into it all. I would have called my surgeon's office, but he is 4 hours from me and it takes 48 to 72 hours to get a call back from the nurse there. So I thought I would start with my primary care. It is odd and I am not sure why it is happening. Later yesterday evening, I had major burning down my left leg and severe pain in my low back. Couldnt bare weight on my left leg. Not sure if it is connected to the bladder leak or what. Just not sure what is going on. Thank you again for your help!!

Dear Momof2,

Please understand that I am speaking in general terms, and I cannot specifically comment on your illness because I don't have all the necessary information - I don't know why the stabilization was performed in the first place etc.

I'm glad you contacted you doctor. It may, however, be difficult for him to try to determine the cause of your symptoms without consulting the surgeon who did the operation in the first place.

It may be difficult even for your surgeon to determine the cause of your symptoms without a new spinal plain X-ray (to see the position of the fixation material) and possibly a new spinal MRI to see if nervous structures are in distress.

The fact that youy still feel (much) better than before the operation and the fact you have symptoms only while swimming speak in favour of conservatite treatment, meaning no further operations.
