Lump in neck

MY 38yr old boyfriend has a swollen lymph node on his neck that has appeared for no apparent reason. We took him to his family dr. who didnt seem to be to worried by it said it was nothing and measured it and said to return in 4 weeks. There is a extensive history of differant types of cancer that runs on BOTH sides of chris's family even his aunt on his dads side dyed at a very young age from some sort of cancer. All of this he "Neglected to tell his Doc. Either way we are absolutely freaked out and want to know do lymph nodes just swell for no reason? I dont see anything good coming from this, do you?

Heres a link on lymph nodes and their function. I would trust your Dr.'s opinion and when he returns for follow-up which is good the Dr. wants him to, I would discuss his family medical history with the Dr. Keep the next appointment. Lymph nodes are like filters, and I would think they can swell esp. if you have infections etc., or a disease process.
