have had pain in my chest since Feb., when I had a viral flu. I had just quit smoking after about 13 years, so I had a chest x-ray that came back normal. I was diagnosed with chostrocondritis (sp?) in ribs and was treated for that with two rounds of steriods and pain meds. Then they switched me to prilosec, etc. thinking it may be heartburn. I switched docs at this point. The new doc sent me for a bone scan. The doc there that briefly reviewed it said it looked unremarkable. I got a note in the mail today, saying some arthritis appeared in my sternum and ribs. I am healthy, 31. What could this be and how could it be caused. It does not run in my family. I also have heel spurs (on both feet), and occaisionally get heat sensations up my right leg. Help, I am a nervous wreck!

In most cases the cause of costochondritis is unclear. However, though quite rare, it could also be due to viral or bacterial infections. The inflammation in the costochrondral junction-the area that connects ribs with the sternum, may caused by the viral infection per se. If you are experiencing pain, consult your doctor so that you will be prescribed with the right medications to manage your pain. Here are a couple of blog entries about costochondritis:

Dear GatorGrad,

First of all, I highly doubt it that your chest pain is of cardiac origin. It does sound like Chostochondiritis and NSAIDS are the mainstay of treatment. You need to give it time to heal however. It will eventually resolve itself. Relax. Stay away from smoking also.
