My son, 3.5 is on daily flovent. He was on a very high dose for about 1 month(April) and also at that time was on ventolin about 3x/day.Sometimes a a little more. He is now down to 1 or 2 puffs(flovent) once daily and has not needed the ventolin in about 3 weeks. However his voice is quite hoarse. He is also having some mild allergy sypmtoms, runny eyes, allergic shiners, stuffy nose, occasional sneeze and occasional cough. These mild symptoms are the reason i am not completely weaning him off of the flovent. Before his April attack, he had not been on any daily steroid for about 1 month just ventolin as needed, which was rarely. I am just wondering if the hoarse voice is a problem that should be looked at by his ped.? Or is it a harmless side effect? His attacks are quite mild in comparison to some of your DC's, so it would not be at all life threatening for him to be off of flovent. He has only had oral steroids and ER breathing treatments 3 times in his life, and all 3 times we went home from the hospital within 12hrs. Other attacks have been managed at home with inhalers. Seems to be definate allergy & or viral induced.

thanks for any advice you have for me!!

Hi anngay17,

Yes you should have him seen by his pediatrician. You should not wean or adjust his breathing medications on your own or without being told to do so by his DR. Sounds to me his symtoms were severe enough in the beginning to warrant an ER visit. Allergy and asthma are nothing to second guess in children and a regime of breathing treatments or inhalers to keep him on an even keel is most important so you won't have to have him in the ER in a breathing crisis. Have him seen and discuss all concerns regarding flovent and daily maintenance of his medications. Ask him if he feels your son needs allergy testing as well. You may search flovent using the search bar. One word of advice about children and allergy or asthma ( if you don't breath you don't live) and childrens symptoms can become worse in a short amount of time. Dr. always knows best.
