I had endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy two years ago for axillary sweating. The doctor severed the nerves instead of cutting or clamping them. I am currently experiencing compensatory sweating and have begun sweating in my axillary area again. I spoke with the doctor that performed my surgery and he believes that my nerves may be regenerating and is suggesting that I have the surgery again where he can go in and completely strip the nerve. He also stated that if I did not do this then there is a chance that the nerve could attach to other areas that could cause pain or other issues. I am concerned to have this surgery again because I do not want to take another risk at experiencing negative side effects, but I also do not want to have negative side effects from not having it again. Do you have any recommendations for me or advice? I really appreciate your time and help. Thank you.

In my opinion you should try to exhaust other treatment possibilities first. The evidence for the effectiveness of this type of surgery is poor, and there is the possibility for serious and immediate complications.

Discuss with your own physician. I cannot recommend the procedure but I can only speak in general terms.
