Hello,

About a month ago I got a tatoo on my ankle. It healed well except on some areas of the tattoo I notice that the skin is raised, particularly where there is red/violet pigment. My concern is if this can be an allergic reaction to the ink. This is my first colored tattoo. I am not sure if this is a normal healing reaction from the tattoo or if this is something that I should go see a dermatoligist for. The skin areas that are raised itch. The itching is not intolerable, however, it concerns me because it has already been a month and the tattoo is not scabbing anymore and seems completely healed. Also I have read of possible allergic reactions to red ink even years after getting a tattoo, is it possible for someone to experience anaphalexis shock from the tattoo years after getting a tattoo (if they become allergic later on)? Your reply will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome.

Heres a link on tattoo pigments and allergy. May be a good idea to let your Dr. have a look, he may prescribe a topical ointment to relieve the itch etc.
Good Luck.

Thank you. That is really helpful. I was wondering if there is anyway I can keep my tattoo but make the itchy bumps go away. Are there other options of treatment besides laser treatment. This really sucks because I love body art, it just sucks that I may be allergic to red ink.
