 I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with chf. He gained 6 pounds in four days. The doctors have performed lungs fuction tests on him and the results showed that there was a decrease since his test last year. The doctor has told him that he thought that a pill (amiodorone) that he was on for a heart dysrrhythmia could be a cause of the chf, so he has been taken off of the pill.

The doctor has also told him that when he listens to his lung sounds, they sound clear so he doesn't know where the fluid is going to. He was just in the hospital for a week and had two lasix drips hung and the doctor said he doesn't understand how he is still gaining weight. Took look at my friend, you can see that his stomach is distended. He was also just diagnosed with bladder cancer for the second time. I was wandering could the cancer have anything to do with the fluid retention? I want to thank you for your time in reading this email and hope to hear from you. Thank you again.

Hi and welcome,

Here is a link on amiodarone:

http://heartdisease.about.com/cs/arrhythmias/a/amiodarone.htm

It does have effects on tissue saturations etc. and effects of long term use. I really can't say if it caused his CHF, as I'm not a Dr. If he has clear lung sounds now and the CHF resolved for now, with a destended stomach and weight gain something is sure going on. What is being done for his bladder cancer? Is he voiding ok, have edema in his extremeties?
Is he being seen by an internist or oncologist?? I think he should be and soon.

Best Wishes,

@delvinklein- the thread-starter's friend is a guy, so it's quite useless to talk about ovarian cysts because males don't have ovaries.

Retention of the fluid can be caused by a cancer (cancer cells can produce fluid), kidney disorders, heart problems, protein loss. I think that more tests should be done, because there may be different causes of fluid retention.
