I have had a problem that has occurred 4-5 times now, over the last year and a half. It happens when I first wake up and I feel what seems like the pulling of a muscle under the left side of my tongue. This results in the immediate swelling of the neck underneath where the pain occurs. The pain is significant and has a real burning sensation. The swelling is instant, very large, and feels like it may be fluid in there. The pain shortly reduces a bit and usually lingers for the day, and usually gone by the next. The swelling has roughly the same longevity with little to no pain in the area of swelling. What is going on with me?

I strongly recommend that you visit your doctor. Burning mouth syndrome is among the possible causes of burning pain in the tongue. This can be due to nutritional deficiency, or other conditions that affect the nerves. Here's a link for more info: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/burning-mouth-syndrome/DS00462

Thanks for the help, but that doesn't seem to explain the significant swelling that immediately follows the burning sensation. Any thoughts?

I'm sorry but I didn't find any information about that. I hope that you'd find time to talk to your doctor.
