View Full Version : Blood sample with large syringe - why did he push it in?

Hi,

I was having some blood taken from me yesterday evening, and I know from past experience it is very difficult to find a vein.

Now I have absolutely no medical knowlege or experience, but after about 5/6 attempts at trying to find a vein, the doctor seemed to have found one on my right arm. I looked down after about 15/20 seconds (maybe more) or so and saw he was using a large disposable needle (he stated he 'needed a lot') and was very slowly extracting blood. I watched in horror for about ten more seconds, and noticed he was occasionally pushing the needle top back in a bit, to give him more pulling space. I'm not sure if the needle top (it doesn't vacuum instantly when pushed in) has a bit of play, or if it is safe to do that in this situation so long as it is not too much? Why would he be doing this? My only comfort is that surely he wouldn't be doing this unless there was a concrete/safe explanation? Should I be worried about this? It has really, really been playing on my mind ever since it happened. Also, why would the blood be coming out so slowly?

Thanks in advance.
