I have a big dilemma and I am looking for additional information from doctors along with some suggestions as to the type of medical assistance that is required. Ok - as bizarre as this sounds - here is the story.
I am a construction manager. I am in the process of building a new park with football fields, soccer fields and concession stands. During the excavation for sewer pipe, we unearthed several thousand domestic animals buried in black, plastic bags - in varying stages of decay. Also - since the bags aren't sealed - the contents have opened and spilled onto the ground. The county director of environmental health has made a blanket statement that there is NO health risk - albeit it is nasty and stinky.
I am not a doctor - but this did not make sense to me. How can this be true? I don't drive along the street and pick up roadkill for fear of disease. So is this just an urban myth? Or is there a health concern? I hired two industrial hygenists that came out and told me that there IS a real risk for health issues. The opinions are exactly polar.
Which one is true???
Thanks
Amy

What a strange story. I'm not an expert on this stuff, but common sense says that handling a decaying animal carcass without appropriate protection may be hazardous to your health, due to risk of infection.
