Dear doctor joshua,
I am a 23 year old female who until recently has been healthy. however now im experiencing several problems. It started five months ago when after each meal at nite my stomach bloated up severe and i had severe cramping i wud have 2 go 2 bed. One morning i woke and had a severe cramp. Went to doctor and based on symtoms she diagnosed me with IBS with no tests, even though i had no diahorrea etc.Surprisingly this suddenly stopped. maybe get occasional cramp the odd time.
However now i have something completely different. I started when i would need 2 pass faeces very suddenly and as soon as i had i wud need to go again within a few minutes passing large volumes. I have looked on the web and have never came across this as a problem. One night i passed a large volume of blood passing faeces, this only happened once. Went to doctor. He said he was referring me urgently however this was months ago and i havn't heard anything. Should i go back to GP?
Now my periods have changed which were always regular but i did take the morning after pill so i know this can affect it. My period did come normally after doing this but lasted two weeks the first week it was very light. The same happened last month. Now my period has not come. Im not pregnant either.
I know this is a weird complaint, i just hope u can offer me helpful advice on this embarrasing topic.......please!!! I know it could be a number of things, could u email me the possibilities even if they are serious....
cheers

Dr. Joshua

Hi Gorgeousfemale, thanks for your question. Blood in faeces is always reason enough to see the doctor, although the most common reason for bright blood in stool is hemorrhoids. These can be succesfully treated with diet, exercise, ointments and sometimes surgery. However, first a physical and rectal examination needs to be done to rule out other, more serious causes. Please see your GP about this.

Irregular periods are not uncommon. Your having taken the morning after pill may have disturbed your hormonal balance and consequently disrupted your period rhythm. It is usually sufficient to wait and see if the next period will occur normally before going to the doctor. To make sure you're not pregnant, you can take a home pregnancy test. If you experience stomach pain or other gyn symptoms, it is best to see the doctor. You can mention your question about periods when you go to see your doctor about your stomach problems.
