A year ago I took a one month cycle of prednisone for treatment of an autoimmune skin disorder. During the cycle, the upper part of my legs increased in size dramatically. It was very noticeable, since I've always been a healthy athletic male with little body fat; I had the upper body of an athlete, but the legs of an obese person. I also experienced leg weakness (legs shaking when I tried to exercise). A year later, and the fat on my thighs is still there, although my strength has returned. I have dieted and exercised harder than at any point in my life (and that's saying a lot), but to no avail. I'm starting to think that the prednisone messed up my hormones somehow. Is this possible? Could my test/estrogen ratio be messed up now?

i doubt that prednisone can be the reason of this...

You should read the side effects for this drug. Among them there are indeed muscles weakness, overweighting. Your endocrine system reacts also very brightly for long Prednison taking because the medicine is a steroid, and steroids are hormones. Anyway you should check your hormones.

Prednisone is used in the management of inflammatory conditions in which the immune system plays an important role. Prednisone most often is used for treating several types of arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, systemic lupus, allergic reactions.

Prednisone is used alone or with other medications to treat the symptoms of low corticosteroid levels (lack of certain substances that are usually produced by the body and are needed for normal body functioning). Prednisone is also used to treat other conditions in patients with normal corticosteroid levels. These conditions include certain types of arthritis; severe allergic reactions; multiple sclerosis (a disease in which the nerves do not function properly); lupus (a disease in which the body attacks many of its own organs); and certain conditions that affect the lungs, skin, eyes, kidneys blood, thyroid, stomach, and intestines. Prednisone is also sometimes used to treat the symptoms of certain types of cancer. Prednisone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works to treat patients with low levels of corticosteroids by replacing steroids that are normally produced naturally by the body. It works to treat other conditions by reducing swelling and redness and by changing the way the immune system works.
