Today I ended up enduring a 16 mile bike ride to my place of employment. The weather was horrible, below 40 degrees, constant down pour and wind. I tried to dress as warm as possible but think I failed.
The first 8 miles, I was cold but fine. The returning 8 miles I was soaked head to toe, was shivering for a bit but then it stopped and just turned into heavy breathing. I had doubled up on clothing and had gloves but the rain soaked through everything, after about 2 mile in on the return trip my hands went numb but then it became that I couldn't grip the handle bars, or the breaks, let alone clench a fist. I was also in a lot of pain. The pain was mainly in my fingers and finger tips. Shortly after that began and grew worse I began having serious pain in my shoulders, neck, and arms. I was no longer riding the bike this point.
I noticed my hands were red, my finger nails bright red. When I made it home I made the mistake of just hopping into a hot shower to get warmed up. As soon as the water hit my hands I was screaming in agony it felt like I had placed them directly on a hot stove. I decided to endure the pain and remain in the shower, after 20 minutes I was, what I believe warmed up enough. I could clench my hands, and feel my fingers at this point but it still brought pain to the tips to touch things.
It's now 4 hours later and while the tips of my fingers don't hurt that much anymore my hands are still bright red, and on occasion I will get a sharp sting of pain in various places on my hands, the tips, the entire finger and a sharp stabbing feeling on my palm. I am also having a kind of stabbing/pinching pain on my right arm as well, most of the pain in my hands is more towards the right hand.
I researched online and realized I shouldn't have done the shower, or apply hot water to my hands. I am concerned that while my hands feel better than they did earlier that the continuing pain is a sign that something is still wrong. The back of my right hand it feels like there is a lump under the skin and when touched it feels like a bruise.
Is this normal to have continuous pain even after feeling has almost nearly all come back to my hands, and for myself to be experiencing pain other places other than my hands, or is this a sign that there are still in danger?
To give an idea I was in the downpour for a combined time of 4 hours but remained in my soaked clothing for 6 hours total. I am still shivering on occasion even though the house is warm and I am covered up completely. I had also experienced feeling extremely sleepy since my return and at a point while still outside I had a moment where I forgot what I was doing.
Sorry for length wanted to cover all bases, and I appreciate any help with this matter. Thank you.
