Dental-Abcess!

Hi,
I just started using a new dentist a few months ago. At my last check-up she insisted on doing a panoramic x-ray. She says that I have an abscess on one of my upper teeth and need a root canal. I have no pain in these tooth at all. Should I have a root canal when I have no symptoms?
