Hi, I'm a 22 year old female. About 12 days ago I started developing a sore throat and my tonsils became swollen. No fever or cold symptoms just pain in my throat. I waited 8 days before going to MedExpress after waking up and not being about to swallow properly because of a large puss filled thing below my tonsil just on the right side. It was so scary to look at so I gave in and went. After describing this to the doctor she glanced at my throat and said "Has anyone ever told you that you have very large tonsils." And that was it she said nothing about the large bump underneath of it, I actually think she didn't see it. I was given a rapid strep test and mono test which both came back negative. So she said I'm going to diagnose it as tonsillitis.

Its been 3 days and I'm done taking my steroids and still on my z-pack antibiotics i was given and no luck. It's still there. And I only have 2 days antibiotics left. I have a very tender neck and can feel pain in my ear and jaw with trouble swallowing. Should I see another doctor because from what I've read on the net it seems It might be a throat abscess? The bump itself is as large as my tonsil. It it going to absorb on its own because I haven't noticed any difference in the size since being on the medication?

If anyone has had this or can give me any information that would be great. I'm worried sick because I don't want the infection to spread and have to seek medical attention because I just graduated from college and have no insurance.

The link below is a picture of it.. beware it's pretty scary.

Wow what an abscess. You most likely should be seen again for treatment of this. It may need aspiration. You could always go to the ER and tell them you have prob swallowing or breathing so they will take you. Heres a link regarding:
