My mom became addicted to Vicodin after a foot surgery and has been taking it for years, going through a months supply of 180 pills in less than two weeks each month. She told him once that she never wanted to be prescribed that again. Then she slipped and fractured her foot. So she got back on it and had been on it for over a year. Then she seemingly "woke up" and decided to call her doctors messenging service (a nurse I think, at the clinic) and leave a message about how she goes through her pills in less than half the time and has trouble with it, not being able to handle it anymore. So she asked AGAIN to not be prescribed the medication anymore AGAIN. Then she "started" to have pains in her knee..... who knows if it's real or not, I'm not an MD but it seems like a way to get meds again. So she calls him up, and he writes her a prescription BEFORE EVEN EXAMINING HER.... and sets up an appt a few weeks from now with another doc, a physician assistant. So she has vicodin again and on the first day she got it, she took WAY more than a days worth.
I don't think this doctor cares... I'm not sure how I can get through to him? Is there a specific supervisor I should contact? I know that they cannot acknowledge her as a patient, because of patient confidentiality but I just need someone to HEAR me and then I hope to god that they will review her records and see that she SHOULD NOT be represcribed a narcotics if she has an ADDICTION to them!!
I know she could go doctor hopping.... and I can't underestimate that potential but she really does not strike me as the type of person who has that kind of energy. So I want to at least somehow get her doc to STOP represcribing it because it doesn't help her!!
What can I do??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks in advance.
