Gday
During a routine tubes cut and tied gig, my doctor discoverd a dermoid cyst in one of my ovarys (size of a golf ball) that was sporting thyroid glands and hair. When it was being removed it burst, some of the hair and contents went back in. Can it start growing again?

also, I understand basically that is can cause hyperthroidism. Being hyperactive most of my life I am wondering if there could be a collation between the two. As I have been a massive eater with minimal weight gain and always on the go.

I am wanting to know whilst I had this dermoid cyst in my ovary what would of the physical side effects been.

thanking you in anticipation

Michelle

Hi myshell,

Welcome to the forum. The best one to answer your question of about the growing back of your dermoid cyst is the Dr. who removed it. The only references I see regarding growing back are ones when people try to remove on their own, say on their face or superficial areas and they don't get it all.

I also didn't find a reference as to these cysts being the cause of hyperthyroidism. Usually it's Graves disease.

Of course I'm not the Dr. But by researching I don't see the one causing the other.

Good Luck

Hi, please see also:

Risk of recurrence after ovarian dermoid cyst removal is about 4%. I'm not an expert on this stuff, so ask your gynecologist for more information, but I would guess that spillage of cyst content (which is mature tissue) should not increase the risk of recurrence in your case. However, spillage may increase the risk of other complications such as adhesions. Please talk to your own doctor about your concerns.
