I developed a mild tingling sensation in the left flank region in March 2008. This sensation would recur often especially after drinking beer or anything cold.I used to drink about 10 bottles of beer every week. Following this I developed what seemed like an allergy- runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion. Over the months that followed, all symptoms i.e allergy related and tingling sensation in the flank region mostly disappeared.

However, the sensation in the flank region has returned and is more aggravated after the following :

In February 2009, I fell sick after I cooked and ate Chicken in West Virginia, USA. What started as severe indigestion and flatulence unfolded into a multitude of symptoms. On day 2, I developed right shoulder/neck pain followed by right shoulder joint pain. That same night I developed high fever and felt very weak accompanied by shoulder joint pain and flatulence. On day 3, the joint pain became migratory and moved from left shoulder to left elbow and from there on to right elbow and right knee staying only at one place at any given time. Over the next few days and weeks eventually, I developed a general weakness, flatulence, constipation, neck pain(sometimes) and heart burn, dull pain in left flank region while in seated position, urgency to urinate, dark yellow urine.

I consulted a doctor exactly a month after the onset of symptoms. At the time of the visit I had the following symptoms: General weakness, very dry skin, mild burning sensation in stomach, constipation. A blood work was done and results were negative for any infection. I was diagonised with IBS. However the symptoms at onset i.e migratory joint pain and fever were disregarded by the doctor as a coincidence. After a few days of the diagnosis, without the aid of any medication, the above symptoms gradually disappeared except for the dull pain in the left flank region with tingling sensation being more aggravated than it was last year. Also, the tingling sensation shows up evertime I cough. Urine is dark yellow sometimes. Skin is dry mostly. Also, I've started to feel a mild pressure in the right flank region too. Just like last year I've developed allergy symptoms(I think so) which I've has consistently for the past 3 weeks(sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, runny nose). I've also developed a mild throat infection, I say mild because usually my throat feels normal however when I tilt my head backwards extending my neck, I get a cough and immediately I feel a burning/tingling sensation in the left flank region.

Today I went to another doctor and he didn't pay much attention to what I had to say. An X-ray test was performed and the results are awaited. The doctor suspects kidney stone. I'm worried about having an infection and the doctor seems to be neglecting that.

I feel that I've had 2 separate issues in the past. The first being related to the tingling sensation in the flank region, what looks like inflammation of the kidney. The second being an infection of some sort(viral/bacterial or parasitic..essentially food borne) that has caused a multitude of symptoms this year.

I need someone who can view this from a perspective than what I've seen the 2 doctors that I've consulted have taken. Could I have renal tuberculosis or a staphylococcus infection?

I appreciate your advice

GH

Hello GH,

If the doctor suspects that you have inflammation of the kidney or any renal problem, for sure there is infection. You know, our urinary system is the one that excretes most of our humoral wastes. If it is malfunctioning or is injured in whatever way, getting infection has a very high probability. I think your doctor knows this already, but he doesnt seem to be worried because a good doctor would treat the main problem in order to eradicate all the other minor ones. Just wait for the result of your tests and follow what your doctor says.

Thanks for replying Dmongking. The doctor called me with the x-ray reports. All He told me was everything was normal in the X-ray and was in a hurry to hang-up. I had to ask him if I should get a blood test or a urine test and he says he thinks everything is normal. I believe I'm in bad hands. Even I, with my little knowledge about medicine know that if your urine is dark yellow you need to get it tested. Also, from what I've read some renal infections like tuberculosis don't show any symptoms for a long duration. I'm completely shocked by the doctor's incompetence. Even the first doctor I visited a couple of months ago, in a matter of 20 minutes, diagnosed me with IBS and all she did was a blood test. I found later that IBS by little research that IBS is a disease of exclusion. Not too suprisingly all IBS related symptoms vanished within a fortnight of the diagnosis without any medication.

Now, I tried calling some laboratories to ask if I could order and get a blood and urine test for myself. I was told that thats not possible and only a doctor can. Also, they don't disclose the results to the patient because of privacy laws! I'm unable to understand what the rational behind such a law is because for me the diagnosis and not privacy come first.

I'm in a total confusion as to what I should do. I need to find a good doctor and this trial and error method of mine is taking me nowhere!

Thanks for reading!

Hey GH,

I would suggest you look for a Urologist, specifically. Urologists specialize in urinary tract diseases. There should be one in your area.

Dark yellow urine may not always indicate infection. It may be due to intake of some medicines such as vitamin B complex or laxatives. Sometimes it may indicate that the urine is concentrated especially with patients who are dehydrated. Anyhow, I hope that you could find another doctor with whom you can discuss your health concerns with. Here's a link about renal tuberculosis: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/381509-overview

Thanks for the replies dmongking and Sue. I'm trying to find a good doctor. Sue, thanks for the information. I'm not taking any medications or laxatives. Infact the last medicine I took was more than five years ago. I've been drinking lots of water too.
