Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment

I know the treatment for DVT is coumadin, lovenox. Unfortunately my husband is allergic to both so he is on fondaparinux. My question is can fondaparinux be taken alone indefinitely? How do we know that his blood is thinning? Since he doesnt get his INR tested.
