White Nails

My son, now 19, has had white fingernails since he was 8 or 9 years old. He has had a physical with blood work. Nothing abnormal showed up. He has also been to a dermatologist and was tested for fungus of the nails. (test:scrapped nail bed) Could this be a birth defect? or a symptom of another problem?

Hi Jules,
I wouldn't think that its a birth defect seeing that it didn't start until he was 8. If he is otherwise asymptomatic and given the negative blood work, my guess is that it probably isn't anything too serious. But I'm not an expert and there are numerous possible causes for this, so its best for him to talk to the doctor if he's concerned. Best of luck!
