Fact or Fiction????
A friend of mine has nail fungus in 2 of her toe nails. She doesn't want to take the oral prescribed medication because of the freq.blood draws to check her liver etc. So she has heard that coating the nails morning and night with Vick's Vapor Rub for several months will cure it and is going to give it a go. Sounds very aromatic to say the least. ????? :-\

Her nails probably won't get congested, at least.

Ideally, a sample should be taken from the nails for culture, to determine if indeed it is a fungal infection or not. Something that looks like a fungal infection is not necessarily a fungal infection.
The vicks vapor rub probably won't do any good, so the alternative (if indeed it is a fungus) is to go through the oral antifungal for several months, or have the nails removed.

In respect as to how this fungus may have occured here are a few good tidbits of advice to keep in mind 1. NEVER USE ANYONES ELSES NAIL UTENSILS such as clippers, cuticle cutteres, nail files orangewood sticks etc.etc.! They can transfer a fungus from person to person. 2. Allow at least 2 hours for your nails to dry out completely before applying polish or artificial nails. 3. when wearing fake nails and one starts to lift DO NOT GLUE IT DOWN! go to your manicurist for removal. And the number one transmitter of nail fungus is?????? YOUR MANICURIST!!!!!! just so you know im a licensed manicurist and my info is what i was taught in mani school. I still like icecream in the mornings

I read an article that Tea tree oil is a potent natural antiseptic and fungicide that will help fight your fungus. Apply undiluted tea tree oil with olive oil to the affected toe nail. Alternatively you can put few drops of tea tree oil on toenails and rub it thoroughly every day.

Hi,
Yes you need to have a KOH prep done to determine if that is indeed a fungal infection. The medical term is tinea ungum. It is rather hard to eradicate even with antifungal medication taken orally. Removing the nails will not guarantee that it won't come back either. Definitely vick's vaporub will not make it go away, but will make your room smell rather aromatic.
