I had my last period on September 6 2008 and I was supposed to start on October 8 2008 but it never came. I am on a blood pressure medication that contains hctz, which to my understanding is a water pill to flush out my kidneys. I have taken 2 pregnancy tests and they both said no. Can the water pill cause the pregnancy test to be negative?

But once your pregnant many medications can cause birth defects so inform your obgyn of all meds presently taken.

For accurate reading, it is recommended to test the first morning urine because it is more concentrated, otherwise it could give false negative result because it may not be able to correctly detect the presence of HCG- the hormone secreted after fertilization. The urine can be diluted if you took too much water or other fluids before the test. Diuretics could affect the results of pregnancy tests, it sometimes gives false positive results. A missed period is not just an indicator of pregnancy it could be due to other health conditions as well. It is therefore necessary to consult your doctor.

Dear Mackat88,
If you are truly pregnant and the pregnancy test on your urine is done at the recommended waiting period and following the instructions on the test properly, that would show as positive, whether or not you take HCTZ or Lisinopril. The opposite is true: if you are not pregnant, the test would be negative regardless of taking those antihypertension medications.

Thanks for all the feedback. I still haven't had my period. I haven't taken any more pregnancy tests. I know that sometimes women can get in sync with their friends and co-workers. I just started a new job on sept 23. Could that possibly be the reason why it hasnt come? I'm really nerveous because my husband and i have been trying to have a baby for about 2 years. what types of medical problems could cause a missed period?

Dear Mackat38,
Sounds like you have Secondary Amenorrhea. This could be attributed to several causes. The OB/GYN will probably draw laboratory tests to include BHCG, Thyroid Panel, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Leutinizing Hormone (LH), Prolactin, among other tests. Let me know.
