I play alot of sports and need to maintain a specific weight. My question is, will this affect my growth. My noramal weight is arounf 127 but when i compete my weight is around 119. i have been this way for about 3 years and I am 17. I dont see any change in my weight so I was wondering if this may be the cause. Another thing to mention is that I am taller than both my parents and no one in my family is that tall. thanks.

It's important that you are getting enough proteins and nutrients such as vitamins when following your strict diet during the competition season. Also, as a growing teenager you need excess energy to support the growth, so long periods of dieting might conceivably affect your growth. In addition to growing tall, healthy growth means that your muscles and bones are keeping up, and your hormonal activity is not disturbed. It sounds like you are growing O.K., but make sure you discuss this with your coach and your primary care physician!

My friend, I think people grow most as infants and then as adolescents, and most Americans have avoided disease and eaten enough meat and milk in their youth to reach their genetic height potentials. When a person receives good nutrition is critical since growth occurs almost exclusively in infancy and adolescence. Humans grow fastest during the first two to three years of life, then growing slows through childhood until about age 10 or 11.
