Symptoms: Intermittent sharp pain on scalp becoming sharper if hair is pulled in that area. After 3 days feels bruised. Pain sometimes radiates to right in front of ear. This has happened 3-4 times before. Usually last a few days, then goes away for a while. Makes jaw feel a bit stiff. No rash or obvious changes in skin.
I don't take pain reliever, as the pain is not constant. It feels like a pin is being stabbed into a nerve on my scalp. Affected area is about the size of a silver dollar. I am 35 year old female - treated for 3 years for Hypothyroidism. Could this be caused by my Thyroid?

I have very similar symptoms. I don't have a history to thyroid problems.
I have found that the tension in my jaw starts first, and as a result, I feel the same sharp pain in my scalp that feels worse if I pull my hair, which I do because it feels like pulling temporarily releases the tension, but also makes the pain worse afterwards - I can also relate to the bruising feeling.
The location of my pain is at the top of my head, right in the centre, and is also the size of about a silver dollar as you describe. My pain sometimes lasts for longer than 3-4 days, but it is also intermittent.
I clench my teeth at night while I sleep, and I believe, although I'm not sure, that the tension in my jaw from clenching my teeth contributes to this pain.
I would really like to know if there are others who suffer with this pain, and what you believe causes it.

Have you ever seen a doctor for this?? You need to follow-up with a physician as it could be several things and then again, it could be nothing. TMJ, occipital neuralgia, etc., you really need to see your doctor for a final diagnosis. Do you take anti-inflammatorys? If so, does it relieve your symptoms?

I am experiencing this pain that you described right now, which is why I decided to "Google" it tonight to see if anyone else has had this problem. I had not associated any jaw pain to the scalp pain, but after reading bjoque's post about clenching of teeth at night I think you may have hit on something because I too clench my teeth at night. I have had this scalp pain several times in the past but I don't recall if I was experience a "clenched teeth" phase during that same time.
Taking asprin has helped relieve the pain but I am really curious as to what is causing the pain in the first place.

Hi! I think any pain in the body is an indication that something is wrong. It is always best to see your doctor and have some tests ran so you will know exactly what the problem is. Early detection of what is wrong with our health promotes early intervention, too. :)
