Nov 2007...1 1/2 weeks after spending 4 days in the hospital following hernia repair surgery, I was readmitted with fever and chills. I was diagnosed with cellulitis of the abdomen. A portion of my incision was reopened and left open. This needed to be pack with gauze 2 times a day. In order for it to heal from the inside out. A culture was taken from where my JP tube was removed from, my urine and sinuses and came back positive for MRSA in my abdomen, urine and sinuses. I remained in the hospital for 4 more days. During which I was given Vancomycin and Rifampin. Was sent home with PIC line to continue Vancomycin and Rifampin for 21 days. Prior to be sent home I had only been told that I had MRSA. And that was it. No directions on what to and what not to do. I didn't even know really what it was except for some kind of infection. At home I had a health care nurse come in once a week to draw blood and change PIC dressing.
The only reason I decided to research MRSA on the internet was because I was looking at the prescription label on the Vancomycin bag and the Dr that was listed was a Infectious Disease Specialist. Let me tell you what a shock that was. I had no idea. I have finished the 21 day treatment. Don't know if it is all gone or not. The medicines caused me to have one yeast infection after the other.
My question are: Since I tested positive for MRSA in my sinuses will the Vancomycin and Rifampin have killed the MRSA in my sinuses? Or should I have been given some kind of ointment for my sinuses?
And shouldn't I have been cultured again after finishing my last dosage of the Vancomycin and Rifampin?
