Doc Joshua,

Thanks for the previous information involving my situation. I have another question about testing. The clinic I go to said that the average person tests HIV accurate at 25 days but a 3 month follow up is necessary. They further add that in rare instances a person may not test HIV accurate until six months. What are the variables that cause one person to test accurate at 25 days but others can take longer? Does it have to deal with the person's immune system? If I am a healthy person with no known illness or disease can I expect the test results from a 7 week test to be accurate? I am still going to go back for my 3 month follow up but I would like to know more about what causes the difference in testing time frames. I have been advised that my situation was a very low risk incident but information from you means a lot to me. Your web site is very informative and has helped me. Please answer and help me understand my situation better.

Thank you so very much!

Dr. Joshua

Hi Marshall, thanks again for your question. The human immune system is a highly complicated machinery, and the immune response to certain viruses and bacteria vary from person to person (what we call interindividual variation). It has been established that at 3 months, the test is not necessarily 100% indicative of HIV status. Whether you are young, old, healthy, or ill, does not reliably predict your immune response to HIV infection. For the great majority, the 3-month test is sufficient, but there are some rare individuals who will not show antibodies until the 6-month test. That's why, in order to be sure, and also to get peace of mind, it's advisable to have the 6-month test taken.
