I have had high blood pressure for several years and take 100mg of Atenolol for control. I recently experienced some intermittant chest pain. When my doctor ordered an echocardiogram, the test showed no abnormalities. I was given Hydrochlorothiazide to alleviate some symptoms ( the doc had noted some mild dystention (sp?) of the carotid arteries while lying down and some mild ankle swelling. It seemed to relieve the swelling and chest pain. However, I have noted that when I have not taken the diuretic for 3-4 days that the chest pain and swelling return. I also noticed swelling in my hands. Should I return to my doctor for further testing? There are no other symptoms. I should note that all adult relatives have had heart disease, strokes, etc. (not a pretty history).

It never hurts to follow up with your doctor if you still have concerns.

Optimom,
This definitely needs to be investigated. You say the Echo was normal huh?
Seek a cardiologist to diagnose your condition immediately. Do not wait. Your history and the symptoms you speak of concern me.

Yes return to your physician. But too its important to take all medications as prescribed by him. Don't stop taking any of them with out his knowledge. HBP is nothing to fool around with esp. if it runs in your family. It can damage blood vessels, heart and many other organs. See your Dr. and show him the edema. But take that medicine! Best Wishes to you.
